Weingut Johann Wilhelm Schild, Ürzig, Mosel

Winemaker Johann Wilhelm believes in small quantity / high quality winemaking, which is why he strictly hand selects his grapes from the renowned Ürziger Würzgarten vineyard. His wines are uniquely aromatic, created from vines averaging 50-70 years old. The “Ürziger Würzgarten” vineyard is internationally recognized as a specialty even among the vineyards of the Mosel valley. The southerly sloping vineyard with soils consisting of a mixture of weathered slate and red sandstone soils is so steep it can only be cultivated by manual labor. Whenever you get a chance to visit German wine country, we highly encourage you to climb those steep vineyards – we promise this will help you to better understand the vibrating-minerally characters of the Rieslings that have grown here for over two millennia. The warm sunlight is absorbed by the slate soils and radiated back towards the vines during night hours. Also the deep roots of the 50 to 70 year old Riesling vines are able to absorb the nutrition of deeper soil layers. The combination of the deep, stony slate soils and the southerly facing slopes that magnify the intensity of the sunlight create wines with unique characteristics: luxuriously spicy, with fruity aroma and outstandingly full-bodied tastes. Ürzig wines taste simply wonderful!

Weingut Rudi und Herta Veit, Piesport, Mosel

In the village of Piesport’s most splendid vineyards such as Goldtröpfchen, Domherr, Falkenberg and Treppchen, the Veit family cultivates about 12 acres of the steep Mosel slopes. Rudi Veit has been the winemaker for over 30 years. Riesling is his favorite and grown in the majority of his vineyards. By gently cutting the vines during the winter months and cultivating the slate soils in the spring, he provides ideal growing conditions for his vines. Intense care of the foliage during the vegetation period is critical for healthy and ripe grapes, Rudi says. The heat storing slate soil makes for wines rich in mineral nutrients. Upon grape harvest, winemaker Rudi focuses on gentle processing of the grapes, intense pre-clarifying of the grape must (juice of freshly pressed grapes, pre-fermentation), and chill fermentation to obtain very fruity Riesling wines, ranging from dry to semi-dry to sweet. Storage of the young wines in “Fuder” oak barrels while maintaining the fine yeasts prior to bottling give the wines their finishing touch.
